Sleep wouldn’t come and Lana found herself rolling from one side of the double bed to the other, trying to find a cool spot and a comfortable position.

It didn’t help that the night was muggy, the temperature and humidity levels seeming to climb rather than drop as the evening wore on. But that wasn’t the only reason.

Her mind was too awake as she replayed recent events, still trying to accept that her brother’s fiancée may have been the one trying to kill her, plus processing the news that Xav had given her when he had called.

In the early, obsessed with each other, stage of their teenage relationship, they had spent most evenings on the phone, usually talking until one of them fell asleep. This call had been different, though, Xav checking in to make sure she was okay, then admitting to the incident that had happened with her brother.

She had been furious. Not with Xav, who was blaming himself, but with her brother, and she wanted to be sick when she found out that he had hit Trudy.

Accident or not, how bloody dare he behave like that?

He hadn’t come home, so she had no idea where he had gone after he had been thrown out of the pub, and she assumed Elise was in her room. That was what she had told Xav when he asked, and he reminded her again to lock the bedroom door when she went to bed.

He could have left the call at that, but he seemed as reluctant to get off the phone as Lana, and they ended up talking as he drove home from Trudy’s, then went up to his studio. As it was still early, he told her he planned to paint.

‘Call me if you need to or if anything happens,’ he had urged before they eventually said goodnight, and she believed he really meant it.

While everything else was falling apart around her, her friendship with Xav was the one thing that appeared to be back on track. Another reason why she was now struggling to sleep.

Things would never go back to how they were before, she understood that. But it didn’t stop her wanting what she couldn’t have.
